astro

the milky way, a hundred frames at a time.

shot during the new moon, a bit further out from where i live. a hundred frames of the milky way, because one frame on its own is mostly noise.

astrophotography needs four sets of images: lights, darks, flats and bias frames. they get stacked in siril for noise reduction and rejection stacking, then the stack goes through starnet2 to strip the stars out. in photoshop i stretch the histogram, separate the colour channels to pull out the hydrogen-alpha, then layer the stars back on and export. the full psd is around 4gb just for editing.

Process

  1. 100 lights + darks, flats, bias
  2. siril: calibrate, register, rejection stack
  3. starnet2: pull the stars out
  4. photoshop: stretch, extract h-alpha
  5. stars back on, export
the core of the milky way stretched across a dark sky, dust lanes in rust and brown, dense fields of stars around it
the stack. 100 frames, one sky.
